In 2009, the Cordova Community Council, working in close collaboration with the City of Rancho Cordova, assembled a citizen delegation which competed as a finalist in the prestigious ?All America City? award competition in Tampa, FL.
We didn't win. But we didn't lose, either.
The event is sponsored by the National Civic League, the nation's leading organization promoting civic engagement and collaboration. The Cordova Community Council and the City of Rancho Cordova are both proud members of this organization. Learn more at www.ncl.org.
Much was gained from the experience, including a surge of pride within the Rancho Cordova community. The Cordova Community Council is poised to once again lead the city's efforts for a second try for the important civic recognition. The competition will be held in Kansas City, MO.
WE ARE AN ALL AMERICA CITY Why go after this award? Because we are an All America City. In striving for promotion of citizen democracy and good government, the Cordova Community Council is in full alignment with the lofty goals which mark an All America City winner. The All America City contestants are judged on:
- Civic Engagement and Collaboration: participation of the public, private and nonprofit sectors and key constituencies to the maximum extent possible and cooperation across jurisdictional boundaries.
- Inclusiveness: recognition and involvement of diverse segments and perspectives (ethnic, racial, socio-economic, age, etc.) in community decision-making.
- Innovation: creative use and leveraging of community resources.
- Impact: significant and specific community achievements, projects that address the community's most important needs, and clear demonstration of project results and impacts (dollars raised or lives impacted).
BECOME AN ALL AMERICA COLLABORATOR In making another attempt at this important award, the Cordova Community Council will be seeking corporate collaborators who share this vision and can support the costs of travel for a citizen-driven delegation. The 2009 delegation was a committed and diverse group of citizens, business people, police officers and city officials who proudly represented our city. The 2010 effort will need support to bring home a designation that will forever mark our city as one that stands apart from the rest.
SPONSORS 2010 sponsorship opportunities include:
- Youth sponsor: Pick up the costs of a teenager to be part of the delegation
- Citizen sponsor: Assist in travel expenses for dedicated members of our delegation who would not otherwise be able to afford to represent our city in Kansas City.
- Senior sponsor: Pick up the travel costs of a senior citizen to be part of the delegation.
- Hometown Hero sponsor: Pick up the travel costs of a firefighter or police officer who may be selected to represent our city.
- Host a fund-raiser: It is important that the widest spectrum of support can be demonstrated from our community. Host a fund-raiser in the workplace or the community at-large to demonstrate that unity.
We know we already are an All America City. But by capturing this award, all sectors of our community - citizen and business alike - attain important bragging rights regarding the superior quality of life and citizen involvement in our community.
