Outstanding Public Service

City of Rancho Cordova Employees

Outstanding Public Service

If you a government worker, there are plenty of jokes you know only too well... That may be true in some government jobs. But not at the City of Rancho Cordova, where city employees can often be seen doing their job ? and a whole lot more.

If you a government worker, there are plenty of jokes you know only too well:

  • You work for an acronym, on an acronym, and your job title is an acronym.
  • You realize that a paperless office is impossible. Actually, you believe it is possible, just not in your office.
  • Fun is when issues are assigned to someone else.
  • Free food left over from meetings is your main staple.

That may be true in some government jobs. But not at the City of Rancho Cordova, where city employees can often be seen doing their job ? and a whole lot more.

It may seem strange to be giving a volunteer award for a group of people who get paid to make our city work. But what we have discovered is that the spirit of volunteering has found a home at Rancho Cordova City Hall.

City employees may have many different home addresses, but many of them spend plenty of their off-the-job hours volunteering right here in Rancho Cordova.

Here are some examples:

  • Last summer, when vandals destroyed equipment and storage used by the Cordova Jr. Lancers football team, one city employee began a fund drive to help replace the equipment. He hoped to raise $1,000 but donations piled up to $2,300.
  • Rancho Cordova city employees are helping in the fight against cancer by forming a team for Rancho Cordova Relay for Life. Team member Paul Junker is well-known for his long distance running at Relay. But staffers also teamed up to raise $3,000 in donations.
  • Fundraising committees within the staff are boosting any number of worthy causes. Food-related events are especially popular and have raised $2,000 among employees for local causes, including scholarships for students at Cordova High School.
  • Employees donate to the Folsom Cordova Community Partnership through the United Way. Last year, city staffers won the United Way?s ?Outstanding Local Government Campaign? trophy.
  • Staff volunteers roasted hot dogs at neighborhood picnics leading up to July?s 5th Anniversary celebration, supported military service members overseas with ?Care Packages? and sold used books and media in support of the VA medical center at Mather.
  • They donated blood, helped with the Christmas Tree Lighting, Volunteer at Weed and Seed events, serve on boards and committees of local and regional non-profit groups. They are at Kids Day, build a float for the Fourth of July, give gifts to the Giving Tree, serve as judges at school competitions, help deliver food baskets to the needy? and on and on and on.

In nominating her co-workers for this award, Lisa Brown put it this way:

?Rancho Cordova can be proud of our city employees who give time, energy, expertise, creativity, money and even blood to help build a great hometown.?

We agree.

Congratulations on a job well done. We appreciate your work in helping us live our cityhood dream. Now everybody: back to work!
