Each year, the Council recognizes outstanding volunteer contributions to the community in various categories ranging from business to faith leadership. The prestigious "Rancho Cordovan of the Year" award can honor an exceptional contribution to the community during the year or over a lifetime.

Ross Johnson
Have you ever pondered why anyone would ever run a marathon? It sounds so painful. A great Czech runner, winner of four Olympic gold medals once said this: "If you want to win something, run 100 meters. If you want to experience something, run a marathon." Ross Johnson, the Rancho Cordovan of the Year, is a marathon runner.

Eppie Johnson
Many years ago, a fast-talking businessman in Rancho Cordova was looking around for a way to combine his love of kayaking and promote his restaurants. With that beginning was born a race that would someday be known as the World's Oldest Triathlon and bears the name of none other than Eppie Johnson.

Straw Hat Pizza
Roll down Mather Field Road on any given Tuesday, and, if you are a local, your car voluntarily makes a sharp turn right near the intersection with Folsom Boulevard. It may be because you need to catch a light rail train. But it probably is because you are making that time-worn trip to Straw Hat Pizza for the weekly fix.

Rancho Cordova's largest annual celebration is the Fourth of July when volunteers transform Hagan Park into our own patriotic wonderland. Those who actually work on this project don't think of it as a party as much as a major miracle.

Sir Winston Churchill once famously said: "Rugby is a hooligan's game played by gentlemen." Some would say that hooligans is putting it nicely. Rugby is a rock'em-sock'em cousin of football and the second most popular sport on the planet. We all own a rugby shirt, but only the toughest among us play rugby. It is also possibly the sport where the players get the muddiest. I mean, they get really dirty. When you utter the word "rugby" in Rancho Cordova, everybody conjures up grinning Jerry Ahlin.

From the beginning, people of faith have believed that the faithful will pursue God's work in community with other people - people in the church family, in a small group, and in the world. They believe we were formed for fellowship, and it's only in community that we learn life's most important lesson - how to love. That is a lesson being explored by members of Cordova Church of Christ Youth Ministry as they reach out to teens in our community - with love... and a fork!
