BloodSource has been collecting blood donations and providing life-saving blood products to their communities and beyond—wherever ever and whenever the need. They do this by doing what’s right: Meeting the needs of patients, physicians, hospitals and donors.
BloodSource began in 1948 as a single blood bank beneath a water tower in Sacramento, operating under the original name of Sacramento Medical Foundation. They changed their name to BloodSource in the spring of 2002 to better reflect their work and to bring all operations under one name. That year, they also set their long-range vision to grow their organization to meet not only the needs of patients within their service area in Northern and Central California, but across the nation. BloodSource believes that they have not only been called upon to provide this expanded service, but that it is the right thing to do.
BLOODSOURCE TODAY
BloodSource is the source of blood and blood components to nearly 40 area hospitals in Northern and Central California. As one of the premier blood centers in the world, BloodSource is also affiliated with domestic and international medical and blood banking organizations, providing blood to other blood banks when called upon.
The new procedures and techniques developed in cooperation with their many physicians, scientists, nurses, specialists, volunteers and donors have proven invaluable in the practice of medicine throughout the world. BloodSource physicians regularly offer professional training and education courses to area physicians, nurses and medical technologists, providing continuing education credits, typically offered free of charge.
In addition to serving hospital transfusion committees, BloodSource physicians are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to offer transfusion-related consultation services to other medical professionals, offering strong clinical expertise to the medical community. Through it all, BloodSource's community-based, non-profit, regional blood center has never lost sight of its essential mission: to provide blood and services to those in need.
MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Perhaps you or some one you love received a blood donation, and now you want to make a difference in some one else's life. Perhaps you're a blood donor who wants to do even more than you already do. Whatever your motivation, BloodSource offers numerous opportunities for you to lend a helping hand.
Your single whole blood donation has the potential to help more than one patient. After your blood is donated, it is separated into various components and then given to patients with different needs. Donating blood takes about an hour from sign-in to having a snack before leaving, but the actual donation takes only five to seven minutes.
