Soroptomist International of Rancho Cordova

Soroptomist International of Rancho Cordova

Soroptimist is an international organization for women who work to improve the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world. Almost 95,000 Soroptimists in about 120 countries and territories, volunteer in local and international projects that benefit women and girls. The name, Soroptimist, means "best for women," and that's what the organization strives to achieve. Soroptimists are women at their best, working to help other women to be their best.

HISTORY: The first Soroptimist club was formed in 1921 by a group of 80 women in Oakland, CA, by Violet Richardson-Ward. Since 1950, Soroptimist International has consultative status with the United Nations' Economic and Social Council, which oversees U.N. activities and policies promoting human rights. It is in this forum that Soroptimist can advocate for our mission of improving the lives of women and girls. The Rancho Cordova club was chartered in 2009 with 15 members.

TODAY: Although our club still has 15 members, we are a dynamic, caring and diverse group of women who are making a huge impact on Rancho Cordova and join with other Soroptimist clubs to make a positive difference in the lives of women and girls around the world.

MEMBERSHIP: Soroptimist International is a membership-driven organization. The Rancho Cordova club presently enjoys having women of all age groups, professional & personal backgrounds and diverse ethnicities.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT: All Soroptimist clubs are 501(c) 3 tax-exempt organizations. Individual clubs receive no public funding. Sources of funding are from grants, fundraising and donations.

HIGHLIGHTS: Since our club chartered in 2009, we have given a Women's Opportunity Awards to two single mothers who returned to school; a Violet Richardson Award to a girl attending Cordova High School for her extensive volunteerism; made and delivered 45 Comfort Kits to WEAVE for distribution to domestic violence survivors at the Sacramento County safe house; consistent partner with Project 680; presently working with five Sacramento-area Soroptimist clubs to host a "STOP Trafficking Symposium" on 3/26/11 to educate the public on this growing and horrific problem and what we can do about it; PLUS SO MUCH MORE!
