The City of Rancho Cordova is among 32 cities from across the country named finalists in the prestigious All-America City Awards competition sponsored by the National Civic League. This is the 60th year for the competition, which will culminate in June 17-19 in Tampa, Florida.
Selected as one of 30 finalists from a field of 151 applicants in March, Rancho Cordova traveled to Tampa to tell a compelling story about how citizens and law enforcement are working together to produce a safer, stronger city since the city incorporated in 2003.
The story, which focused on the city's unique Shared Command Management Model, efforts to reduce speeding and street racing in Rancho Cordova, and outreach to youth with the new Police Activities League, vaulted Rancho Cordova to the national civic spotlight.
But others won over the jury more in a rich exchange of ideas and sharp competition for one of the most prestigious prizes for civic accomplishment in the nation.
"We knew we had a great story to tell and we had a great group of citizens who took the time to figure out how to tell it," said David Sander, president of the Cordova Community Council, which led the presentation team effort. "Now everybody knows what we have known all along: that Rancho Cordova truly is an All-America City, whether we brought home the top prize or not."
Team members included wide representation of the Rancho Cordova community and its component parts, and featured a trio of Cordova High School students who sang the presentation's "Stand by Me" theme.
