A Stormy Day in Southen California |

When my parents decided that our family could afford to move to the nicer side of town, I was really excited we were going for it. Sure, I was going to miss the good old days playing with my friends, eating corn dogs with my dad at The Yellow Basket Restaurant and driving by the Mobil Oil Refinery and watching the big piles of "black sand" spill out of long tubes from the tall machines. But our new house had a lot to offer, so I was feeling good about our future.

Hi dad. I heard the familiar sound of a cable clanging against a metal flagpole the other day and it reminded me of those blustery Saturday afternoons down at the boat docks in San Pedro. The scent of the salty ocean air hung heavy in the harbor as it blended with the pungent aroma from the canvas sails. I know this may sound weird, but my fingers always smelled like barbequed hot dogs after a day at the docks.

In the ultra competitive world of advertising sales, I’ve had
to walk through an average of 20 doors a day for the last 20
years to make a living in this business. Once I’ve navigated past
the gatekeeper, I make it a point to ask every business owner
or manager how business is doing. Since the Great Recession
first began five long years ago, I’ve discovered that times have
been extremely challenging for approximately 90% of the small
businesses I’ve called on. I’ve listened carefully to the first-hand
accounts from thousands and thousands of small business owners,
who have been very upfront and forthcoming as to why they
believe their businesses aren’t doing as well as they had planned.

When my son Bobby and I were out one Friday night enjoying each other's company, along with yet another savory pepperoni pizza, he asked me which book would help him most in life. I was shocked and excited, because from the time he retired his last diaper, I'

For the past two decades, his response had always been the same, "No thanks dad, I'm not really interested in that stuff. Besides, thinking isn’t my strong point!"

After I graduated from college, my big dream was to work for a successful advertising agency. I mailed out close to 100 resumes to every agency in town and then waited for the phone to ring. When that didn't happen, I did what many people do: I gave up on my dream and settled for the first full time job I could get, which happened to be in the retail industry.

Have you ever heard of a man named Larry Holmes? The last time I asked that question, I was in a room full of people and only a few hands rose. When I asked if they knew who Mohammad Ali was, all hands shot up. The fact that the legendary boxer's last fight occurred nearly thirty years ago makes his popularity all the more remarkable. I suppose it's hard to forget about a man who was nicknamed "The Greatest," especially when he gave it to himself!

The Speed of Insanity
What started out as a spirited weight loss challenge between yours' truly and my beloved wife Diana became an odyssey that played out along the frantic streets of Los Angeles. Like the state of California, Diana and I have set about on dozens of inspired (and failed) attempts to trim the ugly fat from our excessive ways. Ours was a spirited quest to lose weight, not gain fiscal responsibility. To make sure our latest plan wasn't foiled by yet another order in the drive thru lane, we came up with some very compelling incentives to stay the course over the four and a half week adventure.
