Citrus Plaza Market
|
|
Every year during the holiday season, the major shopping malls seem more crowded with more and more frantic shoppers who experience the same old selections and price gimmicks. For those of you whose number one Christmas wish is to savor your holiday shopping experience and uncover unique and extraordinary gifts, I recently discovered one of the areas best kept secrets in a quiet and tucked away little strip center just north of Greenback Lane in Citrus Heights called Citrus Plaza. Don't let the humble exterior if this little mall discourage you from going inside the following three shops: Citrus Plaza Books & Gifts, Citrus Plaza Market and Citrus Plaza Catering. Once inside the gift store and the authentic European Market and Delicatessen, be prepared to be dazzled. Your eyes will be amazed by the wide variety of exceptional gift ideas you simply will not find at the big malls. Both the gift store and market are packed with treasures imported from around the world, including exquisite tea sets from Czechoslovakia and mouthwatering German breads baked fresh daily. I met with Slavik Treshchuk, the owner of Citrus Plaza Books & Gifts to learn more about some of the things these three businesses are doing to stand out in the crowd. Here's how our conversation went.
Q: What are some things that people are going to find in your store that are going to be hard for them to find anyplace else? A: The tea sets. You aren't going to find them anyplace else. We have them imported from Czechoslovakia, Germany, Russia, etc. There is a lot of other stuff too that a lot of places don't sell because they think it's too old, but it's very nice.
Q: Do you have low priced items for people on a budget? A: Yes, we have very low prices. For example, we sell our tea sets for $70, but their real value is about $150-250.
Q: Aside from the tea sets, what are some other things that people gravitate towards that they can't find other places? A: Another thing that people seem to like are the Russian Matreshka dolls. Most places they are very expensive, but we have them here for around $15. A lot of kids like them so it's a good present for Christmas. We also have a lot of different perfumes. Those go mostly in the $25-50 range. The average price is about $30 and they are very nice.
Q: Are your perfumes imported? A: Oh yes, we have some from France, Italy, Russia, etc.
Q: And you won't find those perfumes in other places? A: Oh no, they are special. We also have pictures with nice frames. People really like those too.
Q: How long ago did you start your gift and book store? A: About 7 years ago.
Q: What was your inspiration for starting it? A: Everybody likes to buy food from other countries, but it's hard to find foreign gifts in Sacramento and a lot of people were interested. A lot of people wanted more original and traditional things.
Q: It sounds like more people want to go back in time and experience the finer things in life and celebrate the rich cultural diversity of Europe. They want the fine china and roll out the red carpet of hospitality. A: Yeah and it doesn't matter if you have money or not, rich or poor, it's the custom. When people come over, you have traditional tea sets and nice dining set for just about every occasion.
Q: Your friends opened a European Market next door; what kind of items would people expect to find there? A: They have a lot of different sausages from Germany, cucumbers, pickles, peppers and cheeses from Austria, fresh baked German bread everyday, candy and cakes, etc.
Q: So people can find a lot of items in the market that they won't find in the major chain stores? A: No, not at all.
Q: How are the prices at the market? A: They are very good. For example, I have found some of things in the market in other places, such as salami or cheese. We are selling the exact same salami and cheese for half the price. I go and visit my friends up in the Napa Valley and bring some things from my store in boxes, I brought about $25 worth of stuff, and I see the exact same things and it added up to $50. You just pay for the location.
Q: How long have they been open? A: They've been open for 10 years.
Q: Your friend's also operate a catering business, can you tell us a little about it? A: They do a lot of catering for different parties and events (business parties, birthday parties, holidays, etc.). They have a huge menu.
Q: Do they specialize in European Cuisine? A: Yes; and a lot of people like to mix American food and European food. They like to try the European food but also have the American food that they are used too.
Q: Is there a minimum order? A: It doesn't really matter. You can order to go if you need to and just take everything back to your kitchen and it's ready to go. They also do free delivery as well.
Q: Wow! Is there any limit to the miles? A: I'm not too sure, but I know they have done parties up in Lake Tahoe before.
Q: Do they serve deserts too? A: Oh yes, and also when people have a smaller party of about maybe 20-50 people, we have a banquet room next door to rent. They can just call and make reservations.
